![]() Before a new semester of school had started, I had watched the first season at least three times. Then I recommended it to my cousins, tías and tíos. Then I told my parents and sister that we should all watch it together. I voraciously took in all the episodes from the first season within a couple days of their release. “Finally,” I remember thinking, “a show about everyday Latinos in L.A.” I was hooked from the premise alone, but to see the critics I read sing the show’s praises was a special kind of pride. ![]() Norman Lear, a name I was familiar with because he was often referenced by critics I admired, was getting back into the TV business with a new spin on his classic sitcom “One Day at a Time.” It would now center on a multigenerational Cuban family living in Echo Park. But this one was different, at least according to the writers I followed. In the age of peak TV, it was, of course, a reboot. In the winter of 2017, a new show landed on my radar. I wasn’t just watching TV, I was talking to other fans online, familiarizing myself with publications and reading critics from every corner of the internet. Did I find a list of the top 10 podcasts about movies? Already queued up on my app. Did someone I follow on Twitter recommend a show? Downloaded five episodes to listen to. When I started college, commuting from Downey to Cal State Long Beach, my days were bookended by not only freeway congestion but podcasts. (We would watch it together after school the next day.) As I grew, so did my engagement with media. Watching films and television shows has always been a part of my life - some of my fondest memories are of going to the theater to see “Fast Five” with my cousin and making my mom record “Lost” on VHS because it aired after my bedtime. In fact, I went from a 10-year-old movie nerd to later, a 20-something TV obsessive. I wasn’t always a 29-year-old pop culture hound.

It's sturdy enough, but at a horrible cost in weight, and quite slow to set up.Īnyhow. ![]() I really like the monopod after the grips were sorted. Replacement with Neoprene strips held on with double-sided tape is a definite and cheap upgrade that really shouldn't have been necessary. The rubber grips that Gitzo used to use on the leg-locking collars were total rubbish for such a 'prestige' item and seemed to perish or become loose quite quickly. I have a Gitzo medium-sized tripod and a monopod, both bought used at very affordable prices. Gitzo? Not convinced they're worth the money. They also supply a good range of spares at a reasonable price. I've always found Manfrotto 'pods to be a good compromise between price and build-quality/design. Gitzo and Manfrotto are now part of the same group apparently. I wonder if that extra amount of money would really make a difference when it comes to durabilty ? Unfortunately, I don't have the $700+ to spend on a Gitzo and if I did, I would probably wind up spending it on something else. That is some pretty good advice since I've gone through 3 cheapo tripods already when used on a regular basis. ![]() The advice I got concerning Tripods is spend as much as you can then you can forget about it. Instead of leaving a message, I sent an email with pictures of the damged part, but so far I have not received an answer. I tried calling Benro at their USA office but as usual I got a recording saying "Please leave a message". This head looks and feels like real metal, but apparently it's something else, or it wouldn't have broken so easy. Right ? Wrong ! When I took the tripod back inside, I noticed that the head, the part that holds the center column to the body and legs was broken. I dropped the tripod to the ground in my haste, but being that I was standing on a muddy hill, I din't think it would get damaged. Finally, I said 'forget this' and decided to remove the camera from the Tripod to try to get a Hand-held shot. I was on a muddy hill trying to take an exterior picture of a property, but my Tripod kept sinking into the mud, so I could not get a steady shot. To me, the Benro seemed a little "dainty" and I doubted if it could hold up to the rough and tumble treatment tripods usually get in a commercial photography environment. Despite what people said about how strong & sturdy Carbon Fiber is, I felt more comfortable carrying my somewhat heavy aluminum tripod. It also has a small foot-print which allowed me to squeeze into tight spots when I had to. I only started really using it on a constant basis around a year ago, due to the fact that it is very light and compact making it easy to carry. I had my doubts, but for $180 you got a carrying case, 3 center columns long, short and super short, spiked feet as well as rubber feet, plus the head on the Benro C-198 allowed you to place the center column in a vertical and horizontal position, so I took a chance. According to B&H, the founder and co-cofounder had both worked at Gitzo, so they had knowledge of the manufacturing process. Not bad because back then, prices for Carbon Fiber tripods were through the roof !ī&H claimed that Benro was not a cheap chinese knock-off. B&H was having a promotional sale on Benro Tripods and this tripod was selling for about $180. ![]() About 10-15 years ago, (I don't remember), I purchased my first Carbon Fiber Tripod, a Benro C-198 M8. ![]() ![]() It was also recently seen in Seattle, Washington in a 2017 revival. It's confusing that they only put out 6 episodes. I would think that given the huge success of Sons of Anarchy that there would be tons of people wanting to see into the real existence of a Biker Club/gang. I just watched episode 6.What?! That's it? Even though Falco spent 3 years of his life infiltrating this often vicious gang it gets condensed down to 6 shows? What a disappointment. And actually, I appreciated having more insight into what he was thinking and feeling. The show continued to have Falco give a personal accounting, but they were able to make it flow more smoothly into the story. I ended up giving it a second chance and I am glad I did. I remember thinking that The History Channel really messed up what could have been an otherwise great TV show. I just wanted to be able to watch the characters interact - to get to the meat. It seemed quite disruptive and irritating especially when it happened during a tense action scene. As I watched this episode it kept cutting away to have the real Falco give some narration. Sofar seems to pride itself on a sort of genre-less curation, driven instead by “vibe.” On Sofar’s YouTube page, where thousands of performances are documented with Sofar-branded videos, you can get a sense for how evenly this “vibe” is distributed around the world-always mellow, laid-back, and unobtrusive. By and large, those rules demand that artists be smooth, seamless, and unplugged. But it should be noted that to fit with the Sofar “brand,” there are rules to play by. Over the past two years, I’ve attended a number of these shows and seen some talented performers. The music will be stripped back-very chill. ![]() And the curated audience will number in the range of sixty to one hundred. There will be a piece of printer paper with the Sofar logo and social handles taped up. ![]() There will be twinkly Christmas lights-very Instagrammable. But no matter where the show is happening, when an attendee walks into the gig, there’s a solid chance it will feel like this: The audience will sit on the floor. Sofar Sounds currently runs more than six hundred shows per month, with a presence in 441 cities around the world, from Boston and Bangalore to Brasília and Beirut. Meanwhile it pays more than ninety employees in over twenty cities. Sofar has repeatedly used a familiar line to defend its poor payouts: the company is far from profitable. And yet, Sofar has raised $38.1 million in venture funding over four rounds most recently, in May of 2019, it received $25 million in Series C investment led by Battery Ventures and Union Square Ventures, with additional funding from Octopus Ventures and Virgin Group. The folks who host the shows and help them run smoothly are largely volunteers-Sofar cynically refers to them as “ambassadors.” It’s telling, considering a recent piece by musician John Colpitts for Talkhouse reported that the New York State Department of Labor was opening an investigation into the legality of Sofar’s vast reliance on unpaid labor. Its slick promotional videos offer word clouds of Sofar’s corporate mythology: invite only! intimate settings! immersive experiences! And yet, it is largely another creation of tech middlemen where music is devalued in order to bolster a brand: participating musicians are paid poorly (generally one hundred dollars per set, while the company can make from $1,000 to $1,600 per show), sets are twenty to twenty-five minutes max, and it’s ultimately quite easy to leave without ever learning the names of the artists at all. Sofar sells tickets priced from ten to thirty dollars for “secret shows”-attendees “apply” for a chance to buy a ticket, but they don’t know the address until right before the show, and they don’t know the lineup until they arrive. Through its global platform, Sofar claims to be “reimagining the live event experience” and “bringing the magic back to live music.” In reality, it is more like a typical promotion company, but born of classic sharing economy–era schemes. This is Sofar Sounds, a venture capital–backed enterprise that has spent the past decade co-opting the timeless traditions of house shows in order to extract profits from the music world. “Our leasing team is over here in the corner!” ![]() “We have some information and some business cards!” they shouted over the applause.
